New Recycle Center Offers Variety of Services

End-of-year cleaning is easier than ever for Shelby County residents thanks to the new Recycle Center, 1316 N. Michigan Road, located on the same property as the county transfer station and highway garage. A steady flow of vehicles yesterday showed word is getting out.
“All of our services here are at no charge,” Lisa Carpenter, Shelby County Recycling District Director, said.
After checking in at the scale house, recyclers are waved to the building, where they pull indoors and attendants help unload recyclables. Popular items right now include cardboard boxes, cooking oil, live Christmas trees and non-working holiday lights, in addition to the standard defunct electronics, glass bottles and even confidential documents to be shredded.
“You can stand here and watch us do the shredding, if you want,” Carpenter said.
A list of acceptable items and additional information is available here.
The Recycle Center houses offices for Carpenter, educator Ann Warble Haehl and compliance officer Mike Schantz. They previously were located in the old professional building, then temporarily in Annex II.
“It’s such a huge change because the majority of our services were always out here, so to be here is wonderful,” Carpenter said.
The office area also includes a conference room. “We anticipate setting up field trips for school kids to have them come out, do a class presentation and then have them go to our receiving area to watch the process of what we do with the stuff that comes in,” she said.
It’s all thanks to a strong partnership between the City of Shelbyville and Shelby County officials over the past few years, allowing for greater efficiencies and sharing of space and services. For example, city garbage trucks now use the complex transfer station rather than hauling directly to the landfill in Morristown.
“It’s a huge savings for them,” Carpenter said.
The additional space has allowed for other budget savings as well. Electronics are now combined on-site and stored in a semi-trailer. The amount collected since the center’s Nov. 1 opening could have been about a dozen truck trips.
The Recycle Center and Transfer Station are closed today and Monday, Jan. 1, but both will be open tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 30, 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. General hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 7:30 a.m. - 11 a.m.
