NOTEBOOK:
Home sales were down last month in Shelby County, from 42 in April to 33 in May, lower than the 55 sold in May 2023 and 63 sold in May 2022. The median home price remained steady, however, at $245,000, down slightly from $250,000 in May 2024, but up from $210,000 in May 2023 and the $235,000 median price sold in May 2022.
NATIONAL NEWS: Scientists just received approximately $10 million to continue developing a shoebox-sized machine that can detect urinary tract bacterial infection in just 15 minutes—and pinpoint the right antibiotic for the job within another a half-hour. The current diagnostic process typically takes two or three painful days. Doctors often diagnose based on apparent symptoms, which can lead to prescribing the wrong medication (up to half of UTI bacteria are resistant to one or more antibiotics). More than half of women and around one-tenth of men will get at least one UTI in their lifetime, and taking the wrong medicine can drive antibiotic resistance, making it harder to treat future infections. This Day in Shelby County History
News around Shelbyville and the surrounding area as reported on or about this date in history. Selections are curated from the Shelby County Public Library Genealogy Department.
2014: Volunteers helped disassemble the 102-year-old pipe organ at St. Joseph Catholic Church for refurbishing. Loretta Eckstein, then 85, had played the instrument housed in the church loft during Masses from the time she entered high school at St. Joe. She had recently retired as church organist. Curtis Davies frequently played the organ.
2004: A Kent Lockman musical storytelling event entertained a crowd of 137 children and adults at the Shelby County Public Library’s summer reading kick-off.
1994: With summer in full swing, Police Chief Kehrt Etherton issued a reminder about the city’s bicycle ordinance, which required riding on city streets to be done with both hands on the handlebars (a reference to trick riding) and that only one person at a time could be on a bicycle unless it was designed for two. Chief Etherton and Sheriff Mike Herndon also said officers would be vigilant about those breaking curfew, which included vigilance for underage drinking parties along rural county roads.
1984: W.S. Major Hospital employees celebrated the hospital’s 60th birthday with ice cream, cake and music. There was also a display of pictures and memorabilia in the hospital lobby.
After several nights of late work, Police Chief Robert Nolley managed to get to bed at a decent hour. About 11 p.m., though, a dispatcher called him to say that a woman on Elm Street reported “millions” of bugs, possibly “phenol mutants,” running all over the street near her address. Nolley told the dispatcher to have a patrolman get a picture of the “mutants” and he would look at it in the morning. Instead, the patrolman grabbed three of the bugs and placed them in a jar for Nolley. The bugs turned out to be large cockroaches, and according to the patrolman, there were literally hundreds of them running the 800 block of Elm Street.
1974: Renovation work estimates came in to remove an island and deepen the diving area at Porter Pool. In other parks news, plans for a proposed minibike and go-cart trail in Morristown Park were put on hold after insurance estimates were reviewed.
1964: The 50th anniversary of the ordination of Rev. Franz Paul Puhlmann, pastor of Zion United Church of Christ, was observed. The Zion church was one of the oldest in the county. Those on the event committee were Lawrence Kuhn, Mrs. Harry Vaught, Dennie Jane Haehl, Carl Weingarth and Wilbur Haehl.
1954: Shelbyville Baptist Temple purchased a residence at 907 S. Lincoln and four adjoining lots. The residence would be used as a parsonage, and Rev. and Mrs. Howard Winkler, 628 W. South St., would move into the home soon. Plans were underway for construction of a 45x24-foot building to adjoin the garage at the home, which would be used as a temporary auditorium and for Sunday School classes. Construction of a new temple was scheduled for later.
1944: The Shelbyville Street Department announced that local alleys would be oiled, but only if the nearby residents cleaned them and removed debris.
1934: “Date Night” was held at Porter Pool. “A fellow accompanied by a girl will be admitted to the pool for the price of one swim,” The Republican said. The pool was also opening at 6:30 a.m. to test the viability of morning swim hours. In other pool news, the “Bass” water polo team of Russell Klare, Bob Eberhardt, Paul Collins and Victor Higgins defeated the “Chubs,” John Mann, Walter Stiers, Phil Milleson and Frank Coffin.
1924: Sandman Brothers, the East Washington Street tire and accessory merchants, secured the south rooms of the Red Men’s building, facing Pike Street. The space would give them an opportunity to put in a battery service.
The newly installed traction cars were proving popular, with 1,006 tickets bought for round-trip from Shelbyville to either Indianapolis or Greensburg.
1914: Due to a post office delay, a local woman received her Christmas gift in the mail, purchased by her husband. “It will serve for next Christmas now,” The Republican said.
The city dump on North Harrison Street, on the other side of the bridge, caught on fire. A line of hose was stretched from the water plug near Shelby Mills to put it out. The fire had started from sparks from a construction engine used in work to replace a bridge span for the Big Four.
OBITUARIES
David Inlow, 70, passed away November 2nd, 2023, at his home in Durango, Colorado.
He was born December 22, 1952, in Indianapolis, to the late Dr. Paul and Joan (Hitchcock) Inlow. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Jennifer Inlow, of Terre Haute, Indiana.
Dave led an interesting life. While working for government agencies including the Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Park Service, he lived in various parts of the country including Indianapolis, Chico (northern California), San Diego, and Cortez (southwest Colorado). From 1994 on, he lived in Durango, Colorado. In addition to working for the government, he pursued modeling, acting, and working as an extra in TV shows and movies. His biggest role was as the preacher presiding over the burial in Part 3 of the TV miniseries "Comanche Moon." Unfortunately, most of the burial scene was cut, but Dave can be seen leading the procession out of the cemetary at time point 1:29:41. His most humorous work as an extra was playing a zombie in the movie "Undead or Alive: A Zombedy." He appears in several scenes with fellow zombies and can be seen pushing on a wall at 1:13:10. In addition to his film work, he starred in several southwest Colorado TV and radio commercials.
Dave was a great son, older brother, and friend. He is very much missed. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., June 22, at Forest Hill Cemetary. Reverend Bill Horner will officiate. All are welcome. Services have been entrusted to Freeman Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 819 S. Harrison St. in Shelbyville. Memorial Contributions may be made in Dave's memory to the Cancer Association Thrift Store, 31 Public Square, Shelbyville. Online condolences may be shared with David’s family at www.freemanfamilyfuneralhomes.com.
