SHS Spell Bowl Recognized for Appearance at State
The Shelbyville High School Spell Bowl team was recognized last night by the Shelbyville Central Schools Board (see photo below) for their back-to-back appearances in the annual Indiana Academic Spell Bowl State Finals. Members in attendance (listed in order according to the photo above) were Miguel Cazarez, Trent Jones, Kaylee Cazares, Wyatt Haacker, Karina Calderon, Isabella Matney, Elaina Trotter and Delaney Watson. Mr. Uehling is the coach.
In other action, the board approved hiring Hannah Johnson as Hendricks teacher and Kathryn Hardisty as SHS/SMS Agriscience teacher.

2013: The Shelbyville girls basketball team defeated Waldron by hitting eight three-pointers and surpassing 60 points. Riley Achenbach scored a game-high 19 points. Morgan Parker and Taylor Pierce each had 12 points for the Scott Larrabee-coached Bears.
2003: Two local Realtors were recognized at the Shelby County division of MIBOR’s annual awards held at Indiana Downs. Stan Cobb won Realtor of the Year and Deborah Hartman won Affiliate of the Year. Nancy Sexton was president of the group; Gloria Chapman, Chairman; Brenda Baughman, Vice Chairman; Dawn Branam, Secretary; Vanessa Burdine, Treasurer; and Bob Lewis, outgoing President.
1993: The Shelbyville News published a list of the best decorated homes for Christmas in Shelby County, including: Max Kelly, Waldron; Jeffery Rouse, homemade decorations in Blue River Trails; Randall Coomer, a 24-year tradition of decorating on West Highland Dr.; Dennis and Teresa Cochran (John Deere tractor decorated, complete with a Santa Claus driver), 3339 W. 850 S; Tom and Brenda Woodward, Fountaintown; Valerie Coen, Waldron; Loren (Mike) Mann, Mechanic St.; Danny Davis, S. Harrison; Ronnie Coy, Rays Crossing; Dolph and Dorothy Crafton, Mechanic St.; Beverly Polston, W. McKay/South High Gardens; Marylin Dean, S. Meridian St.; Jim Gobel, Poe St.; Les Slusser, N. 1983: With an overnight low of 3 degrees, local service stations reported heavy sales. Most of the calls received were regarding stalled vehicles, managers said. Local towing services reported towing over 60 cars.
1973: Schools were closed due to heavy snowfall. A newspaper photo showed Rick Moorhead and Kim and Todd Pearson sledding on Spring Hill Road. Snowfall had reached 7 inches.
1963: New sales girls at the SHS Junior candy booth for the last part of the semester were Linda Goodrich, Janet Mark, Terry Coers and Linda Green. Margaret Walts and Betty Mason helped Mrs. Comstock order the candy and stock the case each day.
1953: A newspaper article featured “Charlie” Goebel, 74, often called the “Dean of the Police.” Goebel had retired in 1943 from his officer position. He had attended St. Joseph School and then worked at the Shelbyville Desk Co. until 1896, when he began making harnesses at age 16. He was 38 when he became a police officer, and was then the youngest officer on the force. He and his wife, Edith, had lived at 511 W. Franklin for 47 years. He returned to work post-retirement to help out given the war-related officer shortage.
1943: Firemen responded to four fires in one day, but none caused major damage. Most were due to chimney issues.
1933: The upcoming Christmas party for kids at the National Guard Armory would include songs, games (musical chairs, a “bean game” and cracker-eating contest), a group photo and a dance.
1923: Shelbyville Junior High School students held a Christmas program in the morning, and class was dismissed at noon for the term.
The Shelbyville Independent basketball team defeated the Arlington Independent team, 36-33. Kaufman, Shelbyville center, scored 11 baskets. The team’s next game was on Christmas night against Hope.
