NOTEBOOK:
NATIONAL NEWS: Every winter, elk, deer and moose shed their antlers, and foragers eager for the discarded but pronounced objects engage in a mad dash at the start of the first day of antler collection season in order to get prime specimens. Used as decor, souvenirs, and in some cases dog chews, the remains of the 7,500 elk that winter in the 24,700-acre National Elk Refuge outside of Jackson, Wyoming, are a prized find, in so much demand that this year, for the first time, organizers made the first week open exclusively to Wyoming residents. People will pay $15 to $16 per pound for brown elk antlers — that is, the kind of antlers that are yet to be bleached by the sun. An elk antler might weigh 8 to 13 pounds. This Day in Shelby County History
2014: Jacob Nolley and Katie Lawson were Shelbyville High School’s prom king and queen. Other members of the court were Mitchell Orem, Tyler Land, Cameron Clouse, Chris Asher, Chloe Sandman, Sydney Gilles, Christina Douglass and Kennedy Ross.
Ronald Fuchs of Waldron was named Shelby County’s Super Senior of the Year. Members of the Shelby County Council on Aging - Megan Derry, Karen Smith, Brooke Wampler and Buffy Powers - presented the award.
2004: The funeral was held for Dick Westlake, 76, a former Shelby County Sheriff who had also served as an Indiana State Trooper for 30 years.
Gretchen Haehl and Zachary Tatlock were Lady Mayor and Lord Mayor at the May Festival. Brooke Beckner was named Queen.
1994: Shelbyville High School senior Jennifer Wagner was named Queen of the May Festival, the first to be named in Breck Auditorium instead of the gymnasium. The court did not sit in front of a set of streamers hung from a basketball goal as they had done since the early 1960s. The court sat in front of an elaborate backdrop hand drawn by Floyd Neeb and painted by high school students. Martin Schultz, one of the May Festival’s founders, was in attendance and received a standing ovation. Former teachers Lela McKeand and George Small were also credited with starting the festival, which originated as an event to honor the top male academic achiever. The Lord Mayor in 1994 was Lee Owens and Lady Mayor was Sara Peters.
Aliby’s Restaurant and Living Praise Fellowship Church, 2450 E. State Road 44, were closed due to several building problems, including electrical issues and leaks. Officials were alerted to the situation when a woman called Mayor Bob Williams to say that when she stopped at Aliby’s on her way through town, insulation had fallen from the ceiling onto her plate.
1984: Voting in the primary election could exceed 40 percent, local officials said at lunch time. Turnout for the first five hours was 17.2 percent, and the weather appeared to be improving. In 1982, 46 percent of registered voters in the county voted in the primary.
1974: Six people were hospitalized at Major Hospital after being overcome by fumes from a gas furnace in their apartment building, 6 West Franklin St. Those hospitalized were Ethel Faulkner, Gertrude Fix, Opal Ash, Eileen Smith, Fannie Ellington and Arthur Cherry. A chimney had recently collapsed at the two-story apartment building and forced fumes through the building when the unit was turned on.
Ralph VanNatta, commissioner of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, former Shelbyville mayor and a staunch Republican, received a Democrat party’s primary ballot due to a precinct board inspector’s error. VanNatta stepped away from the booth and found a Democrat in line to vote. The machine was then changed to Republican for VanNatta.
1964: Major School patrol boys received bright yellow helmets. Principal Lester Mullins had ordered the helmets to make the boys more visible to motorists. He planned to order bright orange vests in the fall.
Waldron won their third straight county track championship and their eighth in 12 years. Senior team members who had been on all three recent teams were Marvin Kuhn, John Harker, Gilbert Laws and Wayne Weintraut. Also on the team were Jim Crosby, Larry Montgomery, Bill Harding, Jack Yeend, Lymon Thompson, John Eiler, Jeff Wright, Ron Cox and Bob Arthur. Gerald Laws was manager. Coaches were Bill Doig and Bob Masterson.
1954: Louise Berg’s 1929 Studebaker, a veteran of 25 years on the road, was totaled in an accident in Fairland.
1944: Lucinda Smith was proclaimed Queen of the May at Shelbyville High School. “Selection as the queen is the highest social honor to be bestowed on a girl at the school,” The Republican said. Robert Louden was Lord Mayor. Girls forming an arch of wands were Martha Hayes, Marilyn Gross, Jane Green, Margaret Gross, Janice Kimberling, Hester Hale, Betty Armstrong, Virginia Ferleman, Dorothy Coers, Lois Pierson, Joyce Taylor, Olive Monroe, Helen Howe, Barbara Tovey, Colleen Moore and Marjorie Wiley.
1934: A local man was treated for a scalp wound after he was hit over the head with a tea cup during an altercation at the east end of Broadway. The assailant was placed in jail after he attempted to escape from the police consultation room at City Hall by breaking out a screen.
1924: A Mother’s Day program would be held at City Hall on Sunday, 2:30 p.m., the newspaper announced. Only men and boys were invited. The program would feature a speaker encouraging them to spend more time with their mothers.
1914: Harry Gephart moved his popular City Restaurant, 16 North Harrison, across the street to 103 North Harrison, adjoining Dr. Floyd’s drug store in a space formerly occupied by Mrs. Macomb’s millinery store. Gephart also rented 10 sleeping rooms upstairs to complement his restaurant business. Emma Smith was head cook.
